- A double-spaced page in 12pt Times New Roman holds about 250 words; single-spaced is roughly 500. A paperback page runs 250 to 300 words. Word count is the reliable unit because page count shifts with font, spacing, and margins.
- How long does it take to read this many words?

- Does the counter include spaces in the character count?
- It reports characters both with and without spaces, because different requirements use different measures. Most academic word limits count words, while social platforms and SMS limits count characters including spaces.
- How many words should an essay be?
- It depends on the brief, but common targets are 500 words for a short response, 1,500 to 2,000 for a standard undergraduate essay, and 3,000 or more for a term paper. Most markers allow about 10% either side unless the brief says otherwise.
