What Are Fixations?
A fixation is where your eye pauses to process text. Average readers make 6-8 fixations per line. Speed readers reduce this to 2-3 by using peripheral vision to see more words at once.
Understanding Eye Movements in Reading
Fixations & Saccades
Reading involves fixations (pauses where you process text) and saccades (quick jumps between fixations). Each fixation takes 200-300ms. Reducing fixations directly increases speed.
The Speed Math
At 6 fixations per line: 1.8 seconds/line. At 2 fixations per line: 0.6 seconds/line. That's 3x faster! This is why reducing fixations is the key to speed reading.
