Speed Reading Training
Word Flash Recognition
Train your brain to instantly recognize words without sounding them out. This eliminates subvocalization - the #1 barrier to speed reading.
Word Flash Recognition
Words will flash briefly on screen. Type what you saw as quickly as possible. This trains instant word recognition without subvocalization.
About Sight Word Recognition
Speed readers recognize words instantly as whole units rather than decoding letter by letter. This exercise builds that instant recognition ability.
Why Word Recognition Matters
Eliminate Subvocalization
Most readers "speak" words in their head at 150-250 WPM. By training instant visual recognition, you bypass this bottleneck and can process words at 500+ WPM.
Build Sight Vocabulary
Like how you instantly recognize faces, you can train instant word recognition. The most common 1,000 words make up 89% of text - mastering them transforms reading speed.

- What are sight words?
- Sight words are words a reader recognises instantly as a whole, without sounding them out. Fluent reading depends on most words being sight words, because decoding letter by letter is far too slow to sustain.
- How does sight word practice work?
- Words are shown briefly, one at a time, so there is no time to decode them letter by letter. That forces whole-word recognition, which is what turns a decoded word into a sight word.
- How long should a word be flashed?
- Start around 500 milliseconds and shorten the interval as recognition becomes reliable. Practised readers can identify common words in well under 250 milliseconds.
- Does sight word practice help adults?
- Yes. Adults already recognise common words instantly, so the gain comes on less familiar vocabulary and on raising the speed at which recognition happens — which is what raises reading speed overall.
- Is this sight word tool free?
- Yes, it runs in the browser with no signup or install.
