Speed Reading Training

Span Test - Fixation Width Trainer

Discover and expand how many characters you can perceive in a single eye fixation. A wider visual span directly translates to fewer eye movements and faster reading speed.

Span Test - Fixation Width Trainer
Test and expand how many characters you can perceive in a single eye fixation. Wider fixation span means fewer eye movements and faster reading.

How It Works

A row of characters will flash briefly. Focus on the center and try to perceive the characters on either side using your peripheral vision. The span increases as you improve.

Why Fixation Span Matters

The Math of Speed Reading
If your eyes can perceive 5 characters per fixation, you need ~12 fixations per 60-character line. Expand to 10 characters and you cut that to 6 fixations - instantly doubling your reading speed.
Train Your Periphery
Your fovea (sharp central vision) is tiny, but your peripheral vision can be trained to recognize characters. This exercise systematically expands what you can process in one glance.

Span Width Benchmarks

5-6
Average - most adult readers
7-8
Good - trained readers
9+
Excellent - speed reader level
